Framingham, Massachusetts-based International Data Corp reckons that Ask Computer Systems Inc’s Ingres relational database last year took 40.8% of the European market for databases on Unix workstations. Oracle came next with 24.9%, Sybase took 11%, Informix 7.2%, Unify 6.3%, Progress 5.4%, Borland International Inc’s Interbase 3.6%, and others 8%. Ingres, which contributed 62% to Ask’s third quarter revenues, is expected to account for some $243m of the $430m turnover Ask is expected to report for the year to June 30. Germany has been the jewel of Ingres’ crown, with 700 new licences expected to push revenues there up to $23m from $18m last time around. Oracle Corp remains leader in the overall European Unix market according to Gartner Group.
