Black box to bright future: Virtual sensors and the democratisation of data

The challenges facing the water industry, from ageing infrastructure to the impacts of climate change, are mounting. While many utilities have embraced data analytics, their progress is often hindered by the immense cost and complexity of building a fully sensored network. The conventional wisdom of “measure more, buy more” is simply not a sustainable path forward. This paper provides a blueprint for network resilience and efficiency. It explores ways that virtual sensors can leverage existing data sources to infer critical performance metrics, offering a scalable, affordable alternative to physical hardware.
