Hitachi Data Systems France has stolen a march on its parent Hitachi Ltd and the rest of the group by publishing its annual results for the 13 months to March 31 1990. Pre-tax profits came out at the equivalent of $227,000 on turnover up 15% at $119.1m. Of the total systems placed, 49% by value were outright sales, 51% leased. The company lays claim to 10% of the 3090-type market in France with 59 installed systems, and IBM is said to have an 82% market share – 505 systems. Rather surprisingly, Comparex and Amdahl are at level pegging with 25 and 26 systems respectively, approximately 4% each. Hitachi says it has 130 clients and 172 sites, and CPUs represent 45.4% of sales, with peripherals and services at 38.2% and 16.4%. The company installed 28 new systems in 1989, and 21 of those were in the 10 MIPS to 20 MIPS range. It says that 7380 disks are doing exceptionally well, and in the services sector, it highlights its relationship with the leasing company, Promodata. Hitachi Data in the UK also acknowledges the increasingly important role of leasing. Hitachi Data SA says that plug-compatible manufacturers have advanced since the days of the 308X line so that the 18% share of the 3090-alike market compares with 14% of the 308X market at the same stage of development.
