Fujitsu Ltd and Mitsubishi Electric Corp have joined the notebook computer fray, entering a market currently dominated by Toshiba Corp and NEC Corp, which are fighting each other fiercely for the top spot: Fujitsu’s machine is the FMR-Card, a version of Fujitsu’s FM-NoteBook FMR-50NB and Fujitsu claims it is the first in the world to weigh under 2 lbs – it’s also just 1 thick and runs for more than eight hours on the batteries; it uses the integrated circuit memory cards for which Fujitsu proposed the standard last year; it also has MS-DOS 3.22 in ROM and costs $1,760, and Fujitsu expects to sell 50,000 by March and 150,000 in the following 12 months; the Mitsubishi offering is the Maxynote 386, with 16MHz 80386SX, with MS-DOS, Windows and Maxy menu screen; it costs $3,540 with 20Mb disk, $4,280 with 40Mb disk.
