Expressware Corp is shipping File Express 5.0, which it is flagging as a major upgrade to its flat-file database management system. The product has been rewritten in C and Assembler and basic relational capability has been added so that users can access and place information in relational databases. In an effort to fend off the hungry relational vendors that are trying to grab flat-file users, ExpressWare has added 100 features to the product. For example, File Express 5.0 has word processing capabilities, users can import and export data from eight different formats including dBase, Lotus and WordPerfect files. It has 36 definable macro keys as well as features like colour, automatic addition of field names, calculated fields, word wrap and easy drawing of lines and boxes. The capacity of File Express 5.0 has been increased so that it now handles 2,000m records per database, 4,000 characters per record and 100 databases per directory. It requires MS-DOS 2.0 or later, 512Kb of available RAM and two 720Kb (or larger) floppy drives and a hard disk is recommended. File Express 5.0 is available for $100.
