Intel Corp is to build a new submicron chip development facility called D1A in Portland, Oregon due for completion during the second half of 1992: the $200m expansion will consist of a 430,000 square foot facility that will feature a 20,000 square foot clean room that will ultimately grow to a 50,000 square feet clean room; D1A will develop products such as the 386 and 80486 microprocessors and will begin by producing chips on 8-inch silicon wafers, featuring 0.35 micron line widths ultimately, the plant will develop technologies capable of producing chips with line widths of 0.25 micron or smaller; the new facility will replace an older development facility at the same site which will be turned into a manufacturing plant and together the two facilities will create 400 jobs by the end of 1993.
