Fujitsu Ltd is stepping up research and development work on mobile telecommunications, and by the end of this year it plans to establish two new subsidiaries, one for the development of semiconductor hardware and central base equipment for mobile communications, the other to develop the software side of communications, including architectures: at the end of September Fujitsu set up a new Mobile Communications Division, which is already the fourth largest communications division after the Switching Systems and Transmission Division; Fujitsu has come rather late into the mobile telecommunications field, despite its status as one of the preferred suppliers to Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp of switching equipment – but now that the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications has decreed that from 1992 Japan will begin construction of new digital mobile phone networks, Fujitsu is moving now to ensure it wins a share of the new market.
