Gaithersburg, Maryland-based Penril Datability Networks, the data communications division of Penril DataComm Networks Inc, launched a range of remote access products last week called Access Beyond. The announcement follows a year-long reorganization triggered by the acquisition of Datability in May 1993. The new products replace existing models and strategies with fully compatible versions, said the company, while propelling it into the high growth remote access market. Access Beyond is a series of scalable, modular remote access products that combine modem, ISDN, remote access, internetworking and terminal communications capabilities within a single product line. The company reckons that focusing on a single range will reduce inventory and save money and resources. The modular design of the new products, says the company, cuts the total number of components involved by about 80%. Shipments of the first Access Beyond models will begin in February with others following throughout the year. Penril has also embarked on a new licensing and OEM development strategy, and is working to establish relationships with a range of leading communications companies and silicon manufacturers. The firm has previously announced that it intends to sell its non-strategic divisions, to focus all resources on the communications business. These sales, together with a private placing of equity that Penril expects to close shortly, are planned to raise between $10m and $15m working capital.
