Zenith Data Systems finally unveiled its own Z-1000 version of the Corollary machine at UniForum, stressing that the machine’s modular design allows for the addition of 80386 processors, disk drives, memory and peripherals to keep pace with the recurring need to add more users and run more applications. Zenith plans to offer Novell Inc’s new Portable NetWare – see facing page which transforms the Z-1000 into a file server connecting a large network of micros and workstations. Zenith reckons that the new multiprocessing technology can reach performance levels of 15 MIPS when the Z-1000 is configured with five to six microprocessors. With a 19-slot backplane, expansion is facilitated and Zenith says that it has already signed up several value-added resellers, including multimillion-dollar agreements with two major customers – no names, no pack drill. Shipments to resellers are expected to begin in May, and to support the new product line, Zenith has established a sales, marketing and support group dedicated to the Z-1000. The machine is offered in five models, with suggested retail prices ranging from $19,900 for Model 200 with two processors to $59,300 for the Model 600 with six.
