Xilinx Inc, San Jose, California claims to have the first 20,000-gate field-programmable gate array, saying that it more than doubles the capacity of the previous most highly integrated user programmable logic devices: in addition to the greater density, the XC4000 Logic Cell Array family delivers significant new capabilities to designers of electronic systems, including faster speed and on-chip static RAM, Xilinx claims, adding that the combination of CMOS process advances and architectural improvements increase speed up to 100% over the company’s 100MHz XC3000 family; the company claims to have pioneered field programmable gate arrays, which can be programmed and reprogrammed at the designer’s desk.
