WordPress was back to normal on Sunday after being the victim of a series of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks believed to have originated in China.
The blog publishing platform suffered the first of the large DDoS attacks on Thursday which continued into Friday, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg told TechCrunch.
Mullenweg added that almost all of the attacks, which are the "largest and most sustained" in company’s six-year history, originated in China. Mullenweg also said that the attacks were probably not politically motivated, though he held a contrary view last week.
The Chinese government has denied any involvement in the cyber attacks.
In a typical DDoS attack, multiple systems are used to flood the bandwidth or resources of a targeted system with multiple simultaneous requests so that the servers overload and crash.
Usually a malware accompanies such attacks to enable the infected computers to work without the knowledge of the user. DDoS is widely used by online hactivist group Anonymous.
