The latest version of Mobile Device Center is specifically for Vista users and replaces previous Windows ActiveSync software, which enabled users to synch and transfer content, such as contacts and calendar items, between their Windows Mobile phones, smartphones and PCs.

Microsoft said there had been some installation and compatibility issues with earlier Windows Mobile 6.0 devices. Sometime the Device Center lost updates to files or simply did not synch them at all.

The updated Device Center also boasts, for the first time, synching of HTML-formatted email.

Redmond also announced that Windows Mobile would be compatible with Office 2007 in the third calendar quarter. As such, Windows Mobile 6 Professional and Standard, and Mobile 5.0 touch-screen device users get a free update. They will then be able to edit Office 2007 applications, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel, from their handhelds.

OEMs also are expected to begin shipping Windows Mobile 6 devices with Office Mobile 2007 preloaded at that time.
