WhereNet, a Santa Clara, California-based wireless location and communications technology supplier for managing mobile resources, says VTMS, aimed primarily at vehicle manufacturing/processing centers and car rental agencies, now adds business logic to its RFID tags to automate business workflows around vehicle tracking.

WhereNet’s solution works using active RFID tags and alerting components to trigger a signal whenever a tagged item enters or exits a designated location. The technology is particularly useful in automating logistics in automotive settings for tracking vehicles as they roll off assembly lines. A WhereTag transmitter is linked to a unique vehicle identifier. Active tags surpass the 10 foot range of passive RFID tags.

WhereNet says the addition of business logic adds a much needed process context to RFID data, thereby helping companies avoid the usual deluge of data that RFID systems typically spew out. It also allows companies to prioritize their logistical efforts by creating processing hierarchies based on the value of specific products.

WhereNet is initially targeting its rules-based RFID solution at the automotive industry; Ford Motor Company is already a major client. But its also sees wider applications in other industries as well.

Pricing for WhereNet VTMS starts at $250,000.
