Storage firm Western Digital has extended its mobile hard drive family with the introduction of new a new 7mm, 2.5-inch hard drive, WD Scorpio Blue.

The new mobile hard drive is compatible with industry-standard 9.5 mm slots which making it suitable storage options for mainstream notebooks as well as slimmer notebook and Ultrabook devices, the company said.

WD Scorpio Blue is available in 500 GB and 320 GB capacities and it ensures 400Gs shock tolerance.

The new product consumes less power by optimising the way the drive seeks data through advanced power management features and algorithms.

The WD’s ShockGuard technology will enable the drive to deliver 400Gs shock specification which protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks as well as features WhisperDrive technology that enables quiet performance.

New hard drive also includes WD’s SecurePark that ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability due to less head wear, and improved non-operational shock tolerance.
