Expanding on the Open/Server announcements made by Wang Laboratories Inc last week (CI No 1,538), the new products are designed to integrate Wang’s VS mid-range systems with MS-DOS micros and with the generality of MS-DOS local area networks. The company has also extended its OEM agreement with Novell Inc, taking rights to sell service, and support Novell’s entire NetWare product line. The company has also gone to Proteon Inc for an OEM agreement on the Pronet-4/16 Token Ring twisted-pair networking boards. The company has also signed agreements with Netwise Inc, Graphic Software Systems Inc, M/H Group Inc, Easel Corp and Oracle Corp.All the new products support Wang’s Open/Server Architecture and Open/Architecture schema, which enables users to choose desktop and server processing environments independent of applications. Wang’s Open/server Level One products include PC LAN/VS Access and PC LAN/VS Windows, two software products that provide MS-DOS micro users with VS communications and the ability to run Wang data processing applications. PC LAN/VS Access is from $1,250 to $10,250. PC LAN/VS Windows is $7,500 and both are available now. Level Two products are designed to help in the building of enterprise-wide networks using the client-server model, and enable Wang VS systems to act as servers for a most widely used local area networks. Windows InfoSharer is a Microsoft Windows-based data integration tool that enables users to exchange information among Windows applications, other MS-DOS applications, and VS applications. It costs $300 per micro. VS WIIS Image Workstation 3.0 is a Microsoft Windows-based program that enables users on a client to display and print Wang Integrated Image Systems documents stored on a VS image server and costs $500 per micro. Open/Client 3270-Windows is compliant with Microsoft Windows and supports multiple Systems Network Architecture host sessions; it’s $1,480 to $7,680. VIP Services Windows 7760 provides VIP emulation under MS-DOS or Microsoft Windows so that users running Windows can link to Bull HN mainframes; it’s $1,500. And an Open/Server-VS Vines Application Developer’s Toolkit enables programmers to integrate applications with the management and control features of Open/server-VS. It costs $2,500. All the Level Two products are set for first quarter 1991 delivery.
