Vignette’s content management solution running on the Java[tm] 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE[tm]) technology-based application server from iPlanet will allow enterprises to support more users with rich, personalized Internet content. The combination also provides a full set of productivity tools to facilitate integration of business processes, applications and data.

The iPlanet port is part of an expanded sales, engineering and marketing agreement to provide combined enterprise hardware and software solutions to customers worldwide. Vignette solutions are currently being used in customer proof-of-concept demonstrations and a reference architecture deployed in the iForce[SM] Ready Center in Menlo Park, Calif. The solutions are planned for deployment in other Sun iForce centers and engineering labs worldwide.

As a testament to the strength of the expanded alliance and the Vignette on Sun solution , both companies also announced that they have selected each other’s technology to serve as key infrastructure components supporting their strategic internal sites. Sun chose Vignette V6, the recently announced suite of integrated content management applications, to provide core content management and predictive personalization capabilities for its extensive internal network. Sun intends to integrate Vignette’s content management suite into the Sun ONE architecture, leveraging iPlanet Directory, iPlanet Application Server, iPlanet Web Server and the iPlanet Portal Server to deliver a fully customizable , highly personalized user experience to its employees through an enterprise-wide employee portal.

Vignette will continue to power its primary customer and partner portal, Vignette Global Marketplace (VGM), on Sun’s Solaris[tm] Operating Environment (OE). VGM helps Vignette customers and partners go-to-market faster and more effectively by delivering targeted information and a variety of online collaboration tools. Vignette accumulates years of intellectual capital, including best practices, online training, products, applications, services and road maps in a repository, allowing its knowledge assets to be easily tapped. The Solaris OE helps to ensure the ongoing availability of this resource to Vignette’s more than 1,300 customers with its scalability and support for continuous real-time computing and security.

By working with Vignette, we can provide enterprises with a leading content management, integration and analysis solution to build sustainable relationships with their customers, helping them increase revenue and marketshare, said Doug Kaewert, vice president, Sun Developer Network group at Sun Microsystems, Inc. The combination of Vignette’s open, extensible application suite, based on Java technology and running on the proven Sun platform, has already been embraced by more than 500 customers worldwide and we look forward to continuing that success through our strengthened alliance.

As a recognized leader in the development and deployment of information technology, we are extremely pleased that Sun has selected the new Vignette V6 content management suite to help power its strategic internal site, said Thomas E. Hogan, president and chief operating officer of Vignette. Our expanded alliance provides increased resources for our joint customers that will positively impact bottom line costs and customer retention. The Vignette and Sun alliance combines some of the most scalable and functionally integrated content management applications on the market with Sun’s powerful Java technology-based server solutions.
