The remote computer reader (RCR) upgrade will enable the US Postal Service (USPS) to sort more mail and create more flexible mail processing options during peak periods.
RCR consists of arrays of computer servers loaded with software trained to decipher printed or handwritten addresses on letters. The system accurately machine reads 86% of handwritten addresses, compared to 2% in 1995, and 93% of typed or printed addresses, up from 35% in 1995.
RCR is installed in approximately 350 USPS processing and distribution centers in major cities.
