In what looks like the end of in-house disk drive manufacturing at Unisys Corp, it has told the 450 employees at its plant in Singapore that it will be closed in October and they will be laid off. It is Unisys’ only plant in Asia, and was built for the then Memorex subsidiary in 1987 for $18m. The original Memorex plant in Santa Clara was divested a couple of years ago. In its early days of independence, Memorex Telex International NV got drives from the plant, but all its disks are now from Fujitsu Ltd. Unisys’ predecessor company Burroughs Corp acquired IBM-compatible disk maker Memorex Corp in the early 1980s in order to have an in-house source of mainframe disk drives.
