Most organizations have tightened their perimeter security measures, yet 84% of those polled for a survey on storage security said they perceived internal breaches to be the biggest threat to stored data.
Cisco distributor Zycko said that industry evidence suggests up to 70% of all unauthorized attempts to access stored data will originate within an organization. It notes that as the amount of data that needs to be stored grows, the problems will only get harder and more expensive to resolve.
Use of direct-attached storage makes network-accessible data more open to attack and theft, mostly from inside the firewall. Yet one issue holding back networked storage security is the lack of technology that keeps stored data secure without impacting system performance.
Zycko resells online backup data encryption products manufactured by storage security start-up Decru Inc. The Decru device can be used in-line with host servers, or can be attached to a SAN switch, as a single device or in clusters, to encrypt data at wirespeed using the AES algorithm and a 256-bit key.
Latest updates to the appliance software allow the encryption of data being backed-up to tape, and provides a system for keeping copies of expired encryption keys needed to access encrypted historical data. It also enables authentication of servers accessing data. The device competes against those from Vormetric Inc. and Kasten Chase.
