Twitter has apologised after an internal ‘system error’ accidentally notified thousands of its users to reset their passwords amid reports of accounts being ‘compromised’ by a third party website or service.

The micro-blogging site’s system error prompted several of its users to question if the service had been hit with cyber attack, while they were urged to change their password.

Twitter said in a statement: "We unintentionally sent some password reset notices tonight due to a system error.
"We apologise to the affected users for the inconvenience."

This is not the first time the micro-blogging site has asked its users to reset their account passwords.

In November 2012, Twitter was hacked and about 250,000 users lost their passwords, usernames, emails as well as other data, and were advised to change their password.
