The Tokyo, Japan-based Linux company was formerly one of the leading lights of the global Linux industry but is now mostly focused on the emerging market for the operating system in Japan and China following its acquisition by Japanese software house Software Research Associates Inc in 2002 and its subsequent sale to Japanese ISP and Linux reseller Livedoor Co Ltd in March.

The release of Turbolinux 10 Server marks the first major update to the company’s server operating system since Turbolinux 8 Server was released in October 2002. As such it includes a number of enhancements, including the latest 2.6 version of the Linux kernel, asynchronous I/O, and support for up to 32-way SMP machines with NUMA.

The product also includes the National Security Association’s Security Enhanced Linux functionality, as well as a trial version of Trend Micro Inc’s ServerProtect for Linux anti-virus software and Turbolinux’s own TurboTools visual system set-up and management tool. There are also open source package updates.

Turbolinux will release three versions of Turbolinux 10 Server exclusively for the Japanese market at the end of the month, with the International Version due in December for $299. The Japanese Developer Edition will cost $89 and include 90-day unlimited email support although new user creation and user password modification are restricted.

The product will also be available in Japan for $360 with 90-day unlimited installation and configuration support or $890 for one-year unlimited installation and configuration support.
