The new T3200SXC portable desktop computer from Toshiba Corp (CI No 1,551) turns out to be the first machine to be announced using the thin film transistor active matrix colour displays developed by Toshiba’s joint venture with IBM Corp in Himeji, Japan. According to Electronic News, the new company plans to make 100,000 of the liquid crystal colour displays next year, rising to 5m a year by 1995. The new screen does not come cheap – it adds $3,000 to the price of the existing T3200SX, which is identical apart from having a mono screen. The 10 VGA-compatible screen has 640 by 480 pixel resolution, a contrast ratio of 100 to 1, response time of 20mS and the ability to display up to 256 colours at a time from a palette of 185,500. IBM is expected to start announcing machines using the new colour displays sometime in 1991.
