Siemens AG pops up again in the form of its INCYTA company in the field of translation technology. INCYTA is working with the English philology department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona on a project to enable automatic translation of technical texts from English into Catalan, and vice versa. The ITACA project will cost $884,615 which the Autonomous Government of Catalonia’s Departments of Energy & Industry & Information and Business Development Centre will pay. The project started in April and will take two years to complete. The translation system is based on the Metal/X system developed by another Siemens company, Sietec Systemtechnik. The work at the university is carried out on two Sparc machines; INCYTA has three Sparcs, a Symbolics 3720 and the Metal/X development system. Siemens’ modular automatic translation system is based on artificial intelligence and the translation is made according to the context of the phrase, not word by word, taking account of relevant semantic and syntactic criteria. The product, is available now in German-English, German-Spanish, French-Dutch and vice versa for all programs.
