He has been the acting chief executive of the company since April 2007. Earlier, the former chief executive, Papi Molotsane, resigned after an 18% drop in Telkom’s profit due to discounts and rising investments to compete against rivals. At the time, the company also faced criticism from the South African President Thabo Mbeki for high rates.
Mr September has worked at Telkom for 30 years as well as served on the board of its wireless subsidiary, Vodacom Group, since 2005. He holds a degree in electronic and electrical engineering.
September is an acknowledged expert in the strategic and operational evolution of the telecommunications industry, said Telkom in an e-mailed statement.
Earlier this week, the company reported their results for the six months ended September 30 2007. It recorded a 0.5% increase in its fixed-line revenues and a 17.2% increase in its revenues from Vodacom.
