Moorpark, California-based Tandon Corp has introduced a modular computer system offering cartridge upgradability, and says that its SL-III series of personal computers is the first slimline to package central processing unit upgradability using proprietary cartridges, memory upgradability, seven input-output slots and 32Mb random access memory expandability: the SL-III family is upgraded by changing a cartridge in a manner similar to inserting a video into a VCR; in the 16-bit SL-III model, initial processor cartridges are available for the 16MHz 80286, 20MHz 80386SX and the same with cache memory, the 20MHz 80486SX and 33MHz 80486; a 50Mhz 80486 processing module is on the way; the SL-III also has seven input-output expansion slots for modem capability and modular hard drives are also available in 40Mb, 80Mb, 100Mb, 200Mb and 400Mb capacities; the SL-III also offers four half-height drives and 2Mb of random access memory are standard, expandable to 32Mb; patents are pending on the design and the SL-IIIs.
