Chicago-based System Software Associates Inc, the world’s largest developer of AS/400 software, has introduced the first computer-aided software engineering product for redeveloping AS/400 software. The company’s new AS/SET REV software is claimed to simplify and accelerate the upgrading of existing AS/400 applications into design objects. AS/SET REV also increases the quality of the application by using embedded restructuring rules to streamline existing source code and eliminate redundant code. Ongoing enhancement of the application is then performed at the higher CASE level using System Software’s family of AS/SET CASE products. AS/SET REV automatically transforms existing RPG source code into CASE design objects. These design objects, in the form of data models, action diagram, report layouts and screen layouts, can then be viewed in a variety of graphical formats and easily enhanced with AS/SET’s time-tested software products. AS/SET users can maintain the reverse-engineered design objects from either an AS/400, by using AS/SET ADK, or an intelligent workstation, by using AS/SET IWS. From the design objects, AS/SET ADK generates new source code that is both computer-structured and fully documented. System Software intends to offer products that will enable AS/400 applications written in RPG code to be migrated to C code environments through AS/SET REV’s design objects. Available immediately, an AS/SET REV licence costs between $35,000 and $60,000, depending on the size of the AS/400 model.
