According to Symantec, the acquisition builds on its partnership with Vontu and will provide an important component of its Security 2.0 vision, which focuses on securing both devices and information. Security 2.0 is an initiative which includes new generation of security products and services for information and interactions online.
This acquisition enables Symantec to incorporate Vontu’s DLP technologies across Symantec’s existing endpoint security, network security, storage and compliance solutions. Following the acquisition, the Vontu team will operate as a dedicated team working on Vontu DLP 8 product suite within Symantec’s Security and Data Management Group. According to Vontu, DLP 8 is the industry’s first integrated solution that combines endpoint and network-based technology to discover and protect data wherever it is stored, as well as monitor and prevent inappropriate data usage.
The combination of Symantec’s existing portfolio and Vontu’s leading products and dedicated team enables us to deliver a central component of our Security 2.0 vision to customers − information-centric security that protects both the device and the information itself, said Tom Kendra, group president, Security and Data Management Group at Symantec.
This acquisition by Symantec comes after similar purchases by rivals Websense and McAfee. In October 2007, McAfee acquired enterprise security software vendor SafeBoot for $350m. In January 2007, Websense acquired information leak prevention software provider PortAuthority Technologies. Information infrastructure solutions provider EMC also acquired privately held information security technology provider Verid in June 2007.
