Sun Microsystems Inc is to set up a $27m Java venture capital fund in conjunction with Singapore’s National Computer Board, it was announced on Monday. The fund, aimed at helping companies develop Java applications and products, will get contributions from both Sun and the NCB, but the two are looking for other participants as well. Singapore’s Kent Ridge Digital Labs will help set up a Java resource center in Singapore as part of the deal, and training centers are expected to be set up within academic institutions. Sun and the NCB are also said to be identifying Java pilot projects within the civil service. It wasn’t clear at the launch whether non-Singapore firms would be eligible for support from the fund.
