Like the Microsoft-sponsored Open XML Translator project, Sun’s ODF Plug-in for Microsoft Office is designed to enable Office users to import and export files using the ISO standard OpenDocument Format.
Sun’s ODF Plug-in also goes a step further, however, enabling ODF text files to be set as the default format for Microsoft Word. It supports Office 2000, XP, and 2003 on Windows XP and Vista, although not the recently released Office 2007.
The OpenDocument Format originated with Sun’s StarOffice and the Sun-backed open source OpenOffice.org project, and was approved as an ISO standard in May 2006.
