Sun Microsystems Inc has introduced a new configuration of its popular Netra internet server intended specifically to enable internet service providers to store frequently-visited web sites. Sun says the use of a Netra system dedicated to running Proxy Cache 1.0 server software should mean lower connection costs because fewer calls are made over the internet backbone. The $13,000 250MHz UltraSparc II server also runs Sun’s existing load-balancing and security software and is one of a series of appliance and application-specific servers Sun plans to carve from its Netra line to support proxy serving, security, mail and other functions, as the Enterprise 450 Tazmo Unix server take over general workgroup tasks.
