Sun said the SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 servers will deliver up to 16 times higher compute density than competitive two-socket x86 systems and up to 32 times higher compute density than competitive four-socket x86 systems.

The company said 128 threads will be delivered with virtualization technologies called Solaris Containers and Logical Domains.

Sun and Fujitsu introduced the joint product line a year ago with the release of the T1000 and T2000 servers, both entry-level systems powered by Sun’s UltraSparc T1 processor.

The servers will compete against two and four-socket x86 servers made by vIBM, HP, and Dell. According to the Gartner, Sun’s server revenue in 2007 was $5.9bn and it had a 10.8% share of the market.

The T5140 server is priced at $14,995, while the T5240 server will cost $17,995. Sun is offering a free 60-day trial, and the servers will be sold under both the Sun and Fujitsu brand names.
