The scheme, known as WiFi NetShare, will enable Speakeasy customers to resell their DSL bandwidth to neighbors using any commercially available wireless LAN equipment. Customers can claim a discount on their own Speakeasy subscription equal to 50% of the generated revenue in excess of the original access fee.
Speakeasy sees its initiative as a way to further stimulate the uptake of wireless internet access. The company claims that approximately 40% of its subscribers have already plugged a WLAN access point into their DSL connection, compared with a US national average of only 3%.
The move flies in the face of most ISPs, which have balked at the prospect of customers offering their connection to others via WLAN. Seattle, Washington-based Speakeasy will maintain responsibility for registration and billing.
