At the first annual general meeting of the South African Unix User Group a plan was hinted at to prevent South African Unix users being hit by sanctions that might shut off further licences. The idea is for a computer scientist to write a Unix operating system from scratch following the IEEE Posix and System V Interface Definition standards. The Unix market in South Africa is put at about $27m over the next two years according to Universal Computer Services’ Managing Director, John Bright. Currently there are an estimated 1,000 Unix installations in the Republic. Bright also thinks that Unix’s value to South Africans is enhanced by the fact that it runs on so many different machines, which could prove vital if sanctions cut off supply of key computer imports.
