Sony has announced plans to invest in its production capacity for stacked CMOS image sensors, boosting its supply capability for smartphones.
The Japanese electronics giant will invest ¥105 billion, or around $891 million, in the production facilities for the sensors.
The company aims to increase output from 60,000 sensors per month to 80,000 by the end of June 2016. Previously, the target had been to bolster production to 75,000 units.
The sensors, which provide high image quality and advanced functionality in a compact size, are used primarily in smartphones and tablets. Sony’s investment suggests they expect demand for these sensors to increase as the devices market grows.
The investment will be divided between three facilities, with a ¥78 billion investment in their facility in Nagasaki, ¥10 billion in Yamagata and ¥17 billion in Kumamoto.
