News websites including the Washington Post, CNN and Time have been reportedly hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), which redirected readers to their website.
The latest breach was the result of a security flaw at the content recommendation service provider, Outbrain that recommends links for all the three sites.
Apart from the earlier attacks on several media firms in recent months, the hacking group has reportedly infiltrated Outbrain’s main dashboard and manipulated links that appeared on the media groups’ own webpages.
Outbrain said in a statement that the firm has fully secured the network and resumed service.
"Any additional updates will be posted here," Outbrain said.
"We apologise for the inconvenience."
As part of the attack, the hacking group sent a phishing email to all Outbrain employees claiming to be from Outbrain’s CEO and the message asked them to enter their credentials to see the information.
Upon entering the details, the hackers infiltrated the company’s email systems and were also able to spot other credentials to access internal systems.
Further, the readers of respective readers were also redirected to SEA’s website for a brief period.
Recently, the SEA also attached the Facebook and Twitter accounts of the New York Post.
