It is reported that the KG-200 and KG-201 are National Security Agency (NSA)-certified to secure data up to top secret/SCI, transparently encrypting and decrypting data written to and read from computer storage media (also called data at rest). The KG-200 is designed for desktop PCs; the KG-201 for laptop PCs and other mobile computing platforms.

KG-200 and KG-201 Inline Media Encryptors ensure the protection of classified and sensitive unclassified data and avoid logistical and transportation hassles by securing computer’s hard drive with an Inline Media Encryptor (IME) from ViaSat.

The KG-200 and KG-201 IMEs are the first Type 1 hard drive encryption devices that protect classified data at rest (DAR) at Top Secret (TS/SCI) and below, eliminating the need to courier the classified hard drive when transporting or locking it in a safe when not in use. To secure the hard drive with data encrypted, the operator can remove the IME’s Crypto-Ignition Key (CIK).

Jerry Goodwin, vice president of network systems group at ViaSat, said: This was important for us since it was the first competition for manufacturing Type 1 in-line media encryptors. As our customers deploy our network encryptors they need a product to secure data at the edge of the network.
