Server power management supplier Raritan Inc today added some new features to its rack power distribution units that should give data centre managers all they need to be able to determine their energy costs, right down to the server and application level.
Tracking and displaying power at the IT device level in this way is seen as one way of laying down the groundwork for improvements in capacity management and energy efficiency.
New firmware produced by Raritan for its power strips will allow the units to draw detailed power data from servers and other data centre IT equipment.
The company said Dominion PX 1.3 will produce accurate kWh metering data which could be fed into internal billing and chargeback procedures.
It will also let thresholds to be set and alerts to be sent to data centre administrators when a device has been powered off, or has failing power supplies or has been accidentally unplugged.
The company has also put out a new release of its Power IQ energy management software today, which includes multi-language analytics software that will source cost reports displayed in all major currencies including Dollar, Pound, Yen, Euro,Yuan and the Israeli Shekel.
Power IQ, which comes as a hardware or virtual appliance, gathers and analyses device-level power information, in real time, from servers plugged into the vendor’s intelligent power distribution units (PDUs).
