Hackers have reportedly gained root access to the recently launched Nokia X smartphone and have converted it to run Google’s Android OS and other Google services.

A Spanish developer from XDA developers forum was successfully able to tweak the latest Nokia device to run Google Play Store and Google apps in five steps.

Spanish developer Kasha Malaga was also able to replace Nokia’s custom skin using the Android Now launcher.

Additionally, Malaga was also able to run Google’s apps and services including Gmail, Play Store, Hangouts, Chrome, Google Search, Maps together with Microsoft and Nokia services such as Nokia MixRadio and Nokia Music Player.

The X Android device was mainly designed to evade Google apps and supplement them with Microsoft equivalents including Outlook.com, OneDrive, and Skype.

Powered by Android KitKat OS version, the new smartphone features a dual-core 1GHz CPU, 4GB of memory and 512MB RAM, in addition to a 5MP main camera.
