Cisco has said that its Data Center Business Advantage architecture has been selected by Moses Cone Health System, a North Carolina based health system; and Virtua, a healthcare provider headquartered in New Jersey.
The Data Center Business Advantage architecture offering provides virtualisation capabilities, reliability and 10 Gigabit Ethernet performance.
By deploying the Unified Computing System, Moses Cone Health System expands electronic medical records (EMRs), minimises the network infrastructure build-out and reduces the time needed to configure servers.
The availability and flexibility of the offering enables the Moses Cone Health System to update real-time electronic medical records and support critical clinical applications such as radiology and lab systems.
Virtua deployed Cisco’s Medical Grade Network to replace its network and data centres by new applications, medical images and a new regional health information exchange.
In addition, Virtua deployed an advanced Cisco data centre Ethernet-based network, including Cisco Nexus data centre switches, MDS storage offerings, and high-speed optical offerings.
Virtua’s new data centre features an all-Nexus portfolio, including the Nexus 7000, 5000, and 2000 data centre switches, which provides the capacity needed to support extensive electronic picture archiving and communications systems.
In addition, Virtua will also move to a Unified Fabric with Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), linking storage capabilities directly to the data centre infrastructure, to achieve cabling and power savings.
Virtua assistant vice president of technology Chas Thawley said their existing data centres were becoming strained and they needed to move virtual servers to a new, remote data centre.
"With Cisco Data Center Business Advantage, we were able to move virtual machines between data centres quickly and efficiently, greatly reducing expenses and downtime and we estimate that moving 160 servers virtually instead of physically will save us nearly $100,000," Thawley said.
