Security technology company McAfee has launched its new Cloud Security Platform that offers bi-directional protection of data.

The company said that the new platform is designed to help organisations take advantage of cloud computing by securing all content and data traffic moving between an organisation and the cloud.

Among the modules the McAfee Cloud Security Platform offers are: bi-directional protection for both incoming and outgoing Web traffic; advanced anti-malware protection and corporate Web filtering policies; cloud access control; email security; and Web services security.

The company said by using McAfee’s Data Loss Prevention offering, organisations can first understand where its data resides, classify that data, build policies to protect that data, and then enforce those policies while data travels within or outside the organisation to the cloud.

McAfee Data Loss Prevention discovers data no matter where it resides or what format it is in on the network, said the company. Centralised management and reporting is also provided through integration with the McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator platform.

McAfee Content and Cloud Security senior vice-president and general manager Marc Olesen said once you move data or applications to the cloud, you essentially lose most – if not all – of your security visibility, which most organisations find unacceptable.

Olesen said, "By securing the data and traffic before it travels to or through the cloud, we help businesses extend their security practices and policies into the cloud."

The security modules, powered by McAfee Global Threat Intelligence, can be deployed as an on-premises appliance, Software-as-a-Service solution or a hybrid combination of both.

McAfee has said that it will deploy additional security modules in the coming months.
