Intel has agreed to acquire San Francisco-based application programming interfaces (API) management start-up Mashery for $180m, as part of its move to expand into the software and services’ market.

The acquisition would be the chip maker’s core element of a suite of cross-platform services for enterprises.

Intel spokeswoman said the acquisition is the next step in building an integrated Intel suite of services.

"Mashery brings technology and expertise in the management and exposure of enterprise APIs. Mashery’s expertise in key verticals will enable Intel to further provide user experiences enhanced by service capabilities."

The start-up offers a set of tools for managing APIs, which can be used on-premise or as a service in the cloud.

Additionally, the package includes a portal that allows external parties to use to access APIs, in addition to caching, security tools, a user dashboard and usage reports.

Upon the acquisition, about 125 employees from Mashrey will join Intel and report into the Intel Services Division (ISD) in the Software and Services Group (SSG).

In November 2012, Mashery and Intel collaborated to develop the Intel Expressway API Manager, which is a service developed to solve the problems of secure API enablement and API product management for Enterprises.
