Facebook is trialling a new mobile-ad network that would display ads from a small group of advertisers on other third-party smartphone apps, a step closer to launching an ad network business.

The latest move would assist the social networking major in boosting its revenue by selling ads that appear in mobile apps as well expand the amount of ads being sold.

Facebook said in a statement that the latest trial is currently limited to a few advertisers and mobile app publishers and it is different from earlier tests as, rather than working with a third-party ad-serving platform, it served more as a mobile advertising network.

"Our aim is to demonstrate even greater reach with the same power of Facebook targeting for advertisers both on and off Facebook," the social networking major said.

The new ad network would allow Facebook to join similar services offered by other firms including Google and Apple, in addition to Twitter, which recently made its entry with the MoPub acquisition.

The social networking major has trialled a potential mobile advertising network earlier, while the latest test resembles a mobile ad network as advertisers and mobile app publishers are directly involved without any third-party involvement.
