Utility companies in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) realise the benefits of cloud computing, but remain cautious regarding its adoption and dedicates relatively a small share of their IT budgets to cloud computing, according to a new report by research firm IDC.

According to the report, only 3% of the CEE utility companies surveyed allocate 10% or more of their IT budgets to cloud computing, while one half of the respondents do not dedicate any portion of their budget to it.

IDC Energy Insights senior research analyst Milan Kalal said, "In spite of this, short-term expectations for cloud computing budget allocations are positive."

IT issues have been identified by CEE utilities as the main area to potentially benefit from cloud computing.

The report found 25% of survey respondents consider on-demand server and storage capacity the most suitable for deployment via both private cloud and public cloud.

CEE utilities have also indicated security as the biggest concern in the adoption of cloud-based technologies; specifically, there are worries about entrusting systems and information to an off-site third party, the report said.
