Apple and Samsung Electronics could not reach a settlement in their US patent infringement lawsuit, which leaves them face to face with each other once again in court next month.
Both the smartphone majors had been ordered to carry out negotiations by the court, which saw Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung Mobile Communications CEO JK Shin attending a full-day session in early February together, with mediators, to settle the issue.
Upon failed talks, a joint filing in US District Court in San Jose, California stated that ‘the mediator’s settlement proposal to the parties was unsuccessful.’
"Parties remain willing to work through the mediator jointly selected by the parties," they added.
The latest move is not the first time both companies have sought an agreement out of court. A previous court-imposed mediation session in May 2012 was unsuccessful in generating results.
Both the smartphone makers have been locked in a long-lasting patent dispute in over 10 countries, with each accusing the other of breaching their patented technologies.
Recently, both submitted their final list of infringed patents for their next trial, with Apple alleging that Samsung’s products including the Admire, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note II, and Galaxy S3 devices infringe on its patented technologies, while Samsung alleged Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices had infringed its own patents.
