New research from Dimension Research has revealed that despite the buzz around Big Data, the investment in deployment is severely lacking.
The study shows that while 91% have considered investment into Big Data, only 5% have actually invested in deployment and only 11% have a pilot in place.
One of the key issues that is holding back deployment with open source framework appears to be a lack of expertise (70%), with only 12% stating that they had easy access to Hadoop expertise.
The situation is worse for companies with 1000 or less employees, where only 5% had easy access to Hadoop expertise.
In contrast, the study showed that 93% have easy access to SQL expertise.
Key findings from the study also showed that Data warehouses are still critically important, but challenges remain.
It was found that 99% believe that their data warehouse is important to business operations, but 97% state that they face challenges with their current data warehousing solutions. Scalability and cost are named as the top challenges.
Growing interest in cloud-based data warehousing was shown to be desirable, the study showed that 93% see value in the benefits of cloud data warehousing. Currently 32% have a cloud-based data warehouse and 16% only use cloud-based data warehouse.
The survey showed that 62% have data in the cloud, with SaaS based applications like Salesforce or in public infrastructure clouds like Amazon AWS.
Despite the interest in alternative Big Data platforms, data warehousing investment is continuing to grow, with 70% of companies increasing investment and only 4% reducing investment.
The study asked 315 technology and analytics professionals with responsibility for corporate data initiatives.
