Siebel Systems Inc is the fastest growing company in Silicon Valley, according to the latest Silicon Valley Fast 50 list, issued by Deloitte & Touche. Over the years between 1994 and 1998, Siebel has grown 782,978% – a record figure, and way above the number two growth company, Excite Inc, which managed growth of only 187, 081% over the same period. Front-office software house Siebel’s revenue grew from $50,000 in 1994 – the minimum necessary to appear on the list – up to over $391m in 1998. Netscape Communications Corp was third, with 64, 240% growth during the period.

Other hi-tech companies included in the top ten were Latitude Communications Inc (20, 533%), Concentric Network Corp (18,635%), Vitria Technology Inc (11,284%), DeVries Data Systems Inc (7,326%) Network Appliance Inc (7,305%) and Avant! Corp (3,569%). Nearly half of the list were new companies. Forty out of the fifty were hi-tech companies. Seventeen were from the software sector, nine from semiconductors, five from internet, five from networking/communications, and four from computers and peripherals.
