Secure Computing Inc, a spin-off from Honeywell Inc back in 1989, quietly acquired Border Network Technologies Inc, Enigma Logic Inc, and Webster Network Strategies Inc over the last two years, and now claims to be the second largest network security firm worldwide. Last year, when it spent $13.1m on acquisitions, the company brought in a new management team together under CEO Jeff Waxman, who told the conference that the increase in internet and remote access usage were the prime drivers of the company’s business. The San Jose, California-based firm, which returned to profit after a series of losses for the fourth quarter of 1997, recently launched SecureWire. This is a product combining the capabilities of intranets and extranets for secure business applications, and Secure Computing Firewall for Windows NT BackOffice – the first firewall to achieve BackOffice compliance certification, it claimed. Secure recently hired Howard Smith, founder of Unix office automation software house Clarity Software Inc, as executive vice president, research and product development group.
