The company claims that Exanodes will create high-end virtualized storage pools from the storage components inside commodity application servers to exploit the underutilized internal storage capacity. This would minimize the need for additional external network storage arrays, save data center floor space and reduce power consumption.
According to eweek, chief executive and founder of Seanodes said: We are doing for storage what VMware has done for applications. With Seanodes’ shared internal storage, server virtualization is pushed one step ahead to provide full storage infrastructure virtualization and full storage infrastructure consolidation.
Exanodes, which was initially launched in February 2006, in its enhanced version can work alongside any block storage device, hard disk drives, solid state drives (SSD), redundant array of independent disks (RAID), and external direct attached storage (DAS), the company claimed.
Till date, Seanode has gathered a total of 10 customers for its technology including the French Nuclear Agency, which uses its software to support its hydraulic and thermo-hydraulic research.
Seanodes competes with virtualization companies such as XenSource and VMware. While Xensource partnered with Symantec to offer storage virtualization, VMware has recently introduced ESX servers with new storage features.
