IBM Corp is able to offer its AIX customers an evaluation copy of Unix partner Santa Cruz Operation Inc’s Tarantella software which web-enables applications. SCO says that with the latest 1.4 cut of Tarantella it has opened up the API set, making it easier for developers to provide a single login for users and a more seamless application environment.

SCO says applications viewed through Tarantella 1.4 appear integrated with the local environment, not only within the browser. It also says a user no longer has to switch contexts between an application running in the browser and an application on the desktop; they appears the same whether running locally or remotely.

SCO is also offering more APIs for developers to build portal and webtop interfaces, as it wants to demonstrate that Tarantella is not just way of deploying legacy applications. The software now supports OpenGL graphics and is up on a range of Unixes priced from $400.
