Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has started mass production of Rambus dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips. Initially, Samsung will produce 72Mb and 144Mb Rambus chips. In the first half of 1999, monthly output will be around 500,000 chips, but as the market grows over the year, the company plans to expand production to 5 million chips a month. The Rambus DRAM is expected to be used as main memory in 30% of new PCs this year. The company forecasts that the worldwide Rambus DRAM market will reach $2.6bn this year, and grow to $13.5bn in 2000. By then over half of all memory chips will be Rambus DRAM.
